5 Small But Totally Amazing Towns in Michigan To Raise A Family
Michigan has lots of amazing things to offer. From enchanting wonders of nature, award winning arts and architecture up to bustling and developing cities, Michigan almost have it all.
One of the best and most underrated “feature” of Michigan is its small towns. Living in a small town are perfect for those people who wanted to start up a small business or who wanted to raise a family without great financial expenses. These small towns in Michigan (listed below) offers lots of great things to its local or people who wanted to live in there.
It has a total area of 4.95 square miles (12.82 km2), of which 4.75 square miles (12.30 km2) is land and 0.20 square miles (0.52 km2) is water. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 9,489. It is the county seat of Livingston County and is located mostly within Howell Township, but is politically independent from Howell Township.
Howell is home to many festivals celebrated through the year. Most notably, the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest occurs every year in late June. Activities normally include balloon launches, fireworks, crafts and a mini carnival. Also notable is the “Legend of Sleepy Howell”, a night to celebrate the Halloween spirit usually the weekend before Halloween and “Fantasy of Lights” parade that is in late November. The city is also the site of the Howell Melon Festival, an annual celebration of the Howell melon, a juicy hybrid cantaloupe known to grow only in the surrounding area. The three day festival, held in mid-August, draws approximately 50,000 visitors each year. A newer tradition, Howell hosts the annual Pink Party, a day to recognize breast cancer survivors and raise money for donations.
The population was 6,175 at the 2010 census. The village is located within Milford Township. The village has a total area of 2.52 square miles (6.53 km2), of which 2.43 square miles (6.29 km2) is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 km2) is water. Milford is provided assessing, counties and school districts tax collecting and elections administration for county, state and national by Milford Township. The Village of Milford is a Michigan home rule village with a council-manager form of government. The village is governed by a local charter adopted by village electors. The village council appoints a Village Manager to serve as the Chief Administrative Officer of the government responsible for the management of the village’s daily operations and oversight of all departments.
Clawson is ranked as one of the safest cities in Michigan. The city’s name is a misspelling of John Lawson’s name, a local settler. Clawson began in 1829 and was originally known as Pumachug and The Corners. It was incorporated in 1921 as a village and in 1940 as a city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.20 square miles (5.70 km2), all land. As of the 2010 census, its population was 11,825.
It has a total area of 7.36 square miles (19.06 km2), of which 5.77 square miles (14.94 km2) is land and 1.59 square miles (4.12 km2) is water. As of the 2010 census, Grand Haven had a population of 10,412.
The Grand Haven port community is an active beach resort with boating, fishing, sailing, biking, skating etc. along with connecting campgrounds and recreational areas. The city has over 100 miles (160 km) of bike trails, a state beach, boardwalk, two lighthouses, a pier, wharf, large charter fishing fleet and a Great Lakes port, where it imports limestone, slag, cement and coal while exporting sand. Grand Haven is a destination point for residents of inland cities of West Michigan, as well as many from the other side of the state. Grand Rapidians regularly visit to take advantage of the close proximity to the Lake Michigan beaches, State campgrounds, restaurants, bars, attractions with many even owning cottages in the area as their home away from home.
Grand Haven State Park was nationally recognized for having one of the top five beaches in the United States. The state park also includes a campground on Lake Michigan, near the pier and lighthouses. In addition, the city features a ski park (Mulligan’s Hollow Ski Bowl) and a skate park. The waterfront locations bring tourists from all over the state and region for activities which include, boating, sailing, jet skiing, tubing, wind surfing, and an annual kite festival.
Grand Haven is home to the United States Coast Guard’s “Group Grand Haven,” which coordinates all Lake Michigan Coast Guard activities. The Grand Haven Musical Fountain was built on the opposite bank of the Grand River from the city center in 1969. It plays nightly during the tourist season. When it was built, it was the world’s largest such fountain.
It has a total area of 4.68 square miles (12.12 km2), of which 4.43 square miles (11.47 km2) is land and 0.25 square miles (0.65 km2) is water. In 2010, the population was 10,038 according to the census.
Sites of interest in Benton Harbor are Shiloh House, built in 1910, which served as the administration building and men’s dormitory for the House of David colony, a communal religious group; Morton House (on Morton Hill), built in 1849 by Eleazar Morton, which now houses a museum; Jean Klock Park on Lake Michigan; and the Golf Club at Harbor Shores. In neighboring Benton Township is a large fruit market which replaced the prior fruit market located in the “flats” area of Benton Harbor, which was torn down during an urban renewal project in 1967.
Benton Harbor is cohost of the annual Blossomtime Festival with St. Joseph.
